SMR Shielding
In small modular reactors, incorporating the potential use of pipe wrap shielding for pipe runs that are projected to have high dose rates in the design phase, will enable engineers to include the shielding weight in calculations for pipe support design specifications.
When considering the reduction in floor space for shielding microreactors and small modular reactors, it’s important to understand custom modular shielding design allows for the most weight and space efficient way to maximize attenuation in tight areas.
We manufacture high temperature shielding to protect from gamma and neutron energy sources present within many small modular reactors. This allows Silflex to shield neutron applications that would otherwise melt borated plastics. Temperature ratings on standard high-density polyethylene reach maximum temperature at 120 C where standard Silflex shielding reaches a maximum temperature at 250 C.
